Our instrumental program has grown significantly over the past five years, with beginning Grade 6 players numbering more than 50, close to 40 players in each of our two Middle School bands, and more than 20 players in our Upper School band. Visiting experts not only inspire our young musicians but also help greatly in accelerating their learning.
Given the COVID-19 pandemic, we have taken extra hygiene and safety measures in all of our music classes here at ISP (shifted to larger spaces, limited singing, adopted social spacing of learners, and instituted new cleaning protocols between groups). During band class, while our instrumental learners can’t wear masks, their instruments wear masks when they are playing. With these extra measures, we have been able to continue with our visiting professional musicians this year (a trumpeter, trombonist, saxophonist and clarinetist) who have already come a number of times to demonstrate, coach, and lead sectional rehearsals. One of our regular visiting musicians is the saxophonist and arranger Andy Schofield, who has played and toured with famous bands internationally and is founder and conductor of the Jazz Dock Orchestra here in Prague.
Please read more on the Learning@ISP page about how we are nurturing musicians across the school.
