Insights into the Two-Year Journey to the IBDP Art Exhibition

The Grade 12 IB Diploma Programme Art Exhibition is a two-year personal journey of discovery, resilience, and creative evolution. 

For Class of 2026 Grade 12 students, the journey of the Diploma Programme Art Exhibition allowed students to find a voice through art and share their identity. Starting in Grade 11, led by Upper School Art Teacher, Kirsten Palmer Thompson, students were granted full creative autonomy and were challenged to produce a series of works that allowed them to tell their own story. 

 

 

 

Students experimented with various art techniques and mediums and chose between a number of artistic styles to express their work, while finding their own unique artistic voices. Students learned how to express complex ideas and find a binding force for their work, moving from guided instruction by Ms. Palmer Thompson, and later taking full ownership of their artistic vision. 

“This project gives the students the space to truly showcase who they are because every student develops their work through a personal theme. Whether that is self-reflection, heritage, or identity, every single piece has a distinct purpose. Having spent the last two years with these students, I’ve seen incredible growth. Students were constantly editing their work and realizing that some techniques or ideas might not work as they wanted it to. The frustrations and the ups and downs of creating art are exactly what make the final result so meaningful.”

As they moved through the process, they were able to master skills like printmaking, sculpture making, watercolor and oil pastels. Each student expressed that each artwork was inspired by the previous piece that they completed before to create an inspiring story. 

“Each artwork is born out of the other. In the beginning, I didn’t know what the other artworks were going to be like and each idea led to another idea that led to one cohesive theme and allowed me to share multiple aspects of my life through my artwork.”

One of the most profound aspects of this project was how students navigated the challenges of such a rigorous creative process. They were encouraged to take risks, often moving far beyond their comfort zones to trial new materials and concepts. 

“At the beginning, I was so focused on making things look perfect, but I realised that the most interesting parts of my work came from the mistakes and the unexpected ways materials reacted. It taught me that the process is just as important as the final result.”

Now in Grade 12, the students' transformation of this process was evident as the students presented their final artwork on 24 March. Students curated their own spaces to showcase their work and wrote rationales to guide the audience through their collections. As they stood alongside their finished pieces, it was clear they had developed a deep maturity for art and they grew through this two year journey.

 

 

 

From themes of heritage and self-reflection to mortality and nature, the IB Diploma Programme Art Exhibition was a moving reminder of what our learners can achieve when they are empowered to explore their creativity with such dedication and heart.

“Artwork is a vessel for storytelling and I can communicate things that are hard for me to talk about regularly through art and allow me to channel frustrations or hard things that are going on throughout our lives and channel it in a more positive way. This project gave us the space to explore those frustrations and hard things and I was encouraged to be able to explore that.”
