Middle School Walkathon: Stories of Compassion, Steps Toward Impact
Each year, around 350 children in the Czech Republic are diagnosed with cancer. The journey through treatment is long, often involving chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. For families navigating this experience, the emotional and financial toll can be overwhelming. That’s why ISP Middle School students took action.

This spring, students across Middle School, led by Grade 7, organised a Walkathon to raise funds for Dobry Anděl, a local organisation that supports families facing the financial burdens that come with a cancer diagnosis. Together, the 233 students taking part raised over 190,000 CZK by running or walking a total of 1,481 kilometers! A remarkable achievement that will directly help Czech families through difficult times.
“It feels good to be helping a local organisation. We know this support will make a difference.”
Laura Bradshaw, MS Teacher - Individuals & Society
The Walkathon was a true team effort across Middle School. Students designed posters and signs, helped plan the route, and encouraged one another throughout the event. Staff supported on the day by handing out refreshments and cheering students on as they walked or ran the 1km course.
The cause resonated personally with many in our community. In the lead-up to the event, students and teachers had the opportunity to reflect and share their own experiences; many have a family member, friend, or loved one who has been affected by cancer. These shared stories helped bring greater meaning to the day and deepened students' understanding of the impact their actions could have.

“Our desire to support this local organisation with a significant donation encourages our students to channel their service efforts toward impact. Most of our students and faculty have been impacted by cancer in some way and were given the opportunity to share their stories.”
Dr. Michelle Juasz-Stevens, Middle School Principal
Through running or walking, students not only challenged themselves physically but also honoured those facing far greater challenges. The Middle School Walkathon reflects the strength of our community’s compassion, and how young people, when given purpose, can take meaningful action.
