Empowering Young Designers: The Impact of Quality Tools

Empowering Young Designers: The Impact of Quality Tools

At ISP, we prioritise fostering an innovative learning environment where students can develop practical skills through hands-on design experiences. The MYP Design programme provides students with the tools and guidance to explore creative solutions, empowering them to bring ideas to life and build a deeper understanding of the design process.

In MYP Design, experienced teachers guide students to think critically, actively listen, and empathise with users. By exploring functionality, aesthetics, usability, materials, and durability, students develop a holistic awareness and strategic understanding of the design process.

Studio Tools: The Cornerstone of Innovation

Tools play a pivotal role in creating a thriving design studio. They enable students access to iterative possibilities which form an independent frame of judgement and unique approaches to problem-solving.

“Proximity to quality tools helps build in foundational understanding, awareness and enables skill transfer to transform 2D concepts into 3D working prototypes, iterations, and solutions… providing a means to tackle all aspects of design."

Matthew Martin, MS Design Teacher

Fostering Iterative Design with Festool

The ISP fund has helped facilitate this exciting studio growth with the generous donation and support of high end professional grade tools and equipment from Festool. This investment will allow the growth and opportunity to scale ISP students up in their understanding of physical prototyping, testing and the iterative design process.

From constructing intricate marble run boards to explore the principles of motion and physics, to custom lighting designs that illuminate the nuances of form and function, ISP's design students have been active participants in the transformative journey from abstract ideas to tangible realities. They have delved into the iterative process of design, transforming raw materials into functional and purposeful forms, fostering a deep understanding of design principles and their practical applications.

In addition, the MYP Design Studio thrives in facilitating guidance and best practice to individual student construction projects ranging from art installations and supports, wind tunnel testing environments in science, and fabrication of personal projects.

“As a design teacher, having professional grade tools to quickly cut, manipulate, scaffold, and scale learning in the studio is advantageous.”

Christian Black-Storm, MS Design Teacher

With access to professional-grade tools, our design teachers can quickly adapt to students' needs, providing timely guidance and support. This dynamic learning environment inspires creativity, fosters innovation, and prepares students for a future in design.
