Frequently Asked Questions
When does the ISP Board of Trustees expect to hire the new Director?
The Board of Trustees’ primary concern is to find a leader who is the appropriate person to lead ISP. However, a search for School Director with the appropriate skills typically takes at least 9 to 12 months. We launched ISP’s Director search in August 2019. Our goal is to identify a successor by spring 2020. The new ISP leader will officially start on July 1, 2021.
What is involved in ISP’s Director search?
The responsibility for hiring a new Director lies with the ISP Board of Trustees. The process of identifying a new Director began in Spring 2019 when the Board assembled the Search Committee and hired a search firm, RG175. The next step was to gather community input through interactive listening sessions and an online survey. This feedback was used to develop the “Position Statement” which informs the candidate recruiting and assessment process. The Search Committee is actively vetting and interviewing qualified candidates, and will recommend top candidates to the Board, which will select ISP’s next Director.
What is the role of ISP’s Director Search Committee, and how were members chosen?
The Board of Trustees has selected a group of five trustees and two Leadership team members to serve on the Director Search Committee. This group works closely with the education-focused search firm RG175. The Search Committee will identify, screen and interview candidates, and ultimately to recommend one or more candidates to the board for consideration and eventual selection. The Board sought to create a committee that is deeply committed to the long-term interests of the school. The committee represents decades of experience with, and knowledge of ISP and expertise in specific areas.
What is the role of ISP faculty, staff, parents and students in the search process?
In September 2019, more than 100 members of the ISP community provided input through confidential listening sessions facilitated by our RG175 consultants, Coreen Hester and Mark Ulfers. In addition, more than 200 ISP parents, staff, faculty, alumni and students provided feedback through the online survey. The survey and interactive conversations focused on ISP’s strengths and challenges, as well as the qualities we are seeking in our next Director to continue to inspire, engage and empower learners.
ISP faculty, staff, parents and students will be also involved in meeting and subsequently providing feedback on the selected Finalists during their on-site visits. In doing so, faculty, staff, parents and students play a vital role in assisting the Director Search Committee, and ultimately the ISP Board of Trustees to select the best possible candidate.
What is the Board seeking in a new Director?
The ISP Director search Position Statement articulates ISP’s unique culture, values and goals, and identifies the essential qualities, experience and leadership style we are looking for in our next Director.
Why is Dr. Arnie Bieber leaving?
Arnie has, to date, given eleven years of dedicated service to ISP. Since his arrival, amongst numerous achivements, Arnie has overseen a 20% increase in enrolment, and led the school to an exemplary result of the most recent CIS/NEASC accreditation process. This concluded; “The accreditation committee is unanimous in observing and confirming that the International School of Prague is mission-driven, student focused, future leaning, progressive on many levels, high performing, and a safe, secure place for learning.”
Arnie has decided to move on for primarily personal reasons. As he informed the ISP community;
“My wife Marianne and I made this decision only after long and careful deliberation of personal and professional factors. New York City is not only home to many of our friends and family, but is now also home to both our children, and proud ISP alumni, Joshua and Emma who live and study there. Those family ties are calling us.
Professionally, while I love my job and I believe that we have together accomplished a tremendous amount during my tenure, it will be time, after 13 years of service as Director, to bring on board the next leader who will continue, I am sure, to Inspire, Engage and Empower our community”.
The ISP community has been incredibly fortunate to have had Arnie at the helm for what will be thirteen years, and will miss him deeply.
Will the Director search affect my child’s day-to-day experience at ISP?
The work of the Director search is being conducted by the Search Committee and our consultants, RG175. ISP’s faculty, staff and administration (including Dr. Arnie Bieber!) will remain focused on providing students with an outstanding, tailored, mission-driven academic experience.
